"Interview Like a Pro" is an ongoing series written by Tatiyana Cure, Executive Recruiter, CFS New York
Most interviews begin
the same way, something along the lines of: “Walk me through your background.”
I can guarantee that most interviewees respond in a similar way, starting from college
graduation and discussing their resume in chronological order.
I am not going to
suggest changing that completely, but you have to remember you need to stand
out amongst your peers. I suggest reviewing your professional achievements
starting with your most recent job. Focus on what will relate to the position
that you are interviewing for.
Any time you can
discuss specific numbers, percentages, dollar amounts, or even time frames, you
gain credibility. It’s one thing to say “I cut down on the month-end close time”,
but it’s much more effective to specify “ I cut down on the month end close
time from 20 days to 5 business days by….”. Reviewing your background by
discussing specific accomplishments is much more impressive than reciting the
chronological order of your resume.
Every employee has a
purpose – either save money or make money for the employer. If you can
incorporate this while discussing your accomplishments, you will ensure the
interviewer will remember you.
