Making the Most out of Social Networking Sites

Most people are using social networking sites to help them in their job search. If you are using one of these sites, there are a few things you should (and shouldn’t) be doing!

  1. Don’t come across as desperate-

Never ask for job opportunities on an initial note to anyone on a social networking site. It comes across as unprofessional, no matter how well you know the person. Get into a related topic and bring it up later on.

  1. Privacy controls should be somewhere in the middle-

Allowing the whole world to see all of your personal information is probably not the smartest idea, however; you don’t want to have everything restricted either. A nice balance somewhere in the middle is sufficient. You want people to have a glimpse of who you are so that it will be easier for them to find something to connect to you with.

  1. Put up a picture of yourself-

If you put up a picture of yourself it makes everything more personable. Make sure it is a business appropriate picture!

  1. Don’t use other people to market yourself-

It is not a good idea to use other people’s pages on social networking sites to market yourself. It does not look professional and is most likely annoying to the person who you are doing it to!

  1. Take networking seriously-

If you want someone to see you as a professional, don’t play around on facebook by sending them chain messages, etc. If you want a business relationship with that person, stick to being serious.

  1. Take it one step further-

Once you make new business connections on social networking sites, make sure to follow up with these people either face to face or over the phone to gain a better business relationship. Set up meetings and keep in touch with people.
